Dairies pamper cows with massages, waterbeds

Lucky, a 7-year-old dairy cow, had been walking with a limp for several weeks when veterinarian Sara Gilbertson was called. Instead of prescribing painkillers, Gilbertson tried an unusual new therapy ? a chiropractic adjustment that included a full-length spinal massage.

Gilbertson rubbed the Holstein's spine by gently squeezing it from neck to tail, pausing to apply firm pressure to one hip and readjust several vertebrae. The cow stood in calm silence, moving only enough to reach another mouthful of hay. Later, as Lucky reclined on a bed of sand, Gilbertson noted with satisfaction how relaxed and comfortable the animal seemed.

Cow comfort has become a key concern for the nation's farmers, who have known for generations that contented cows give more milk. The traditional techniques for keeping cows happy aren't complicated ? feed them well, keep the temperature comfortable and give them room to move around. But some dairy farmers are turning to a new array of creative options intended to keep cows as mellow ? and productive ? as possible.

Some farmers have installed waterbeds for their cows to rest on, while others play classical music. And some hire animal chiropractors to give older cows a tuneup and correct minor issues in calves, all part of the effort to ensure maximum milk output.

Do the methods really work? There's no sound scientific data to back up the claims, but dairy farmers say they can see the difference with their own eyes ? cows are giving more milk, the milk quality is improving and the herds seem to be enjoying the indulgences.

"It's kind of like how an athlete with a sprained ankle isn't as productive," said Larry Meyer, 36, whose parents own the dairy farm in Chilton, Wis., where Lucky and another 115 dairy cows live. "If you can get a cow healthy and back to normal, it makes a difference in their productivity."

Cows can suffer injuries if they slip on a slick spot of concrete or get stepped on by another 1,500-pound bovine, and some calves get their necks kinked during the birthing process. The injuries can cause pain when the animals stand, making them reluctant to jostle for food and leading to compensatory injuries. That, in turn, leads to less milk production.

That's why farmers are willing to spend about $75 per session for a chiropractic adjustment.

"The cows tolerate it incredibly well," said Gilbertson, the veterinarian. "They may be apprehensive at first, until they figure out how good it feels."

Chiropractors for cows
Meyer didn't have specific figures on how much milk Lucky gave following her chiropractic treatments, but because her mother was the most productive cow in the herd, he wanted to make sure Lucky was in good shape.

While chiropractic care is reserved for injured cows, dairy farmers also are investing in healthy cows' happiness.

Richard Conrad installed $70,000 waterbeds on his farm in Grafton, Ohio, about a year ago. It took the 220 dairy cows a few months to adjust to the softer surface but now they seem to enjoy it, he said.

"They were real skeptical at first because it was real jiggly," said Conrad, 53, "but once they adapted they didn't look back. They just jump on and stay there."

The result has been milk with fewer impurities and in greater volume ? cows that used to give about 80 pounds of milk per day now average about 90 pounds, Conrad said. However, he couldn't credit the waterbeds with all the improvement; he also upgraded ventilation in his barns and installed misting technology to keep the herd cool.

Dairy farmers commonly adjust air, temperature and lighting to keep cows happy. Some have also installed large rotating brushes that gently scratch the cows' backs and massage their faces and shoulders, said Marcia Endres, a University of Minnesota Extension dairy scientist.

And some dairy producers have employed even more unusual techniques, even in absence of scientific data that justifies their use. In Germany, for example, the Dortmund Concert Hall plays recordings of different classical pieces for specific cows. The hall then serves milk from the respective cows during live concerts featuring those same pieces.

"Which means you'll now be able to both listen to and taste the musical highlights," the hall says in one advertisement.

Dairy experts agree the concept is entertaining, if a bit of a logical stretch. They also agree that dairy farmers need to be careful about introducing new techniques ? music, waterbeds, chiropractic care ? into a herd that's already relatively comfortable.

"Cows are creatures of habit. They like things to stay the same," Endres said. "So many producers like to not introduce too much change. Cows just don't like a lot of weird things happening to them."

95% Yellow Submarine

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you. There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.

Mars 'has life's building blocks'

New evidence from meteorites suggests that the basic building blocks of life are present on Mars.

The study found that carbon present in 10 meteorites, spanning more than four billion years of Martian history, came from the planet and was not the result of contamination on Earth.

Details of the work have been published in the journal Science.

But the research also shows the Martian carbon did not come from life forms.

A team of scientists based at the Carnegie Institution for Science, based in Washington DC, found "reduced carbon" in the meteorites and says it was created by volcanic activity on Mars.

Reduced carbon is carbon that is chemically bonded to hydrogen or itself.

They argue this is evidence "that Mars has been undertaking organic chemistry for most of its history."

The team's leader Dr Andrew Steele told BBC News: "For about the last 40 years we have been looking for a pool of what is called 'reduced carbon' on Mars, trying to find where it is, if it's there, asking "does it exist?"

"Without carbon, the building blocks of life cannot exist... So it is reduced carbon that, with hydrogen, with oxygen, with nitrogen make up the organic molecules of life."

He says the new analysis has answered the first question.

"This research shows, yes - it does exist on Mars and now we are moving to the next set of questions.

"What happened to it, what was its fate, did it take the next step of creating life on Mars?"

He hopes the next mission to land on the Red Planet - the Mars Science Laboratory, also known as the "Curiosity" rover - will shed more light on the big question.

"The question 'are we alone' has been a big driver of science but it relates back to our own origins on this planet. If there is no life on Mars why? It allow us to make a more informed hypothesis about why life is here."

So does Dr Steele think there was, or is, life on Mars?

He laughs: "Get me some rocks back, I'll have a look and let you know."

Managing Your Home Improvement To Do List |

Don't get overwhelmed- start a list

This is the last week for National Home Improvement month. What projects did you get completed? Just because the month is ending and you may not have gotten all of the tasks you wanted done, doesn?t mean you should give up.? Use this last week to create a plan of attack to get those chores completed.

Start your plan by creating a list of projects. It doesn?t matter how big or small, just brainstorm all of the things you need to get done. If you noticed your house losing heat in the winter add installing new windows.? Is your driveway looking spotty from car leaks?? Add power wash the driveway to the list.? By taking the time to see what all needs to be done we can move to the next step to organize the tasks. Remember you don?t have to get everything done this summer and you definitely don?t have to do it all yourself.

Next we organize the list. Create two columns and add all of the things that you can do yourself, like power washing the driveway.? In the second column add the items that you will need help with or may need to hire a professional. If you plan on building a retaining wall, you?ll want big strong helpers. If you plan on building a patio cover you may want to add electrical channeling, this should be left to the professionals unless you are a contractor or electrician.

At this point you have a pretty good idea of what projects you will be able to get accomplished. You can add an estimated time of completion to each project. Washing your driveway can be done in a few hours, at most, so you could get a second project done that day.? For the second half of your list you need to decide which tasks are the most important to you and if you have the funds to complete them. Many companies offer financing, so that should help.? Pick one or two items from this list and start saving your money.? It may take longer to get this side done, but the confidence that comes with using a licensed reputable company will be well worth the money spent.

Hopefully you feel much less overwhelmed now that you have organized your to do list for the summer.?? Just remember you don?t have to do everything this summer or do everything by yourself. ?And don?t forget the most important part, have some fun in between all of this work.

NATO summit's forgotten people: Afghan civilians

Far from the bright lights of Chicago where world leaders met to shape NATO's exit from Afghanistan, one of the war's victims, 12-year-old Aleema, sums up her life in three words: "It's the worst."

Aleema, who has lived in a mud hovel in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Kabul for four years since her family fled fighting in southern Afghanistan, is one of the forgotten people of the NATO summit, which ended on Monday.

There the focus was on the soldiers who fight the war: getting 130,000 NATO combat troops out by a fixed deadline of 2014 and finding funds to pay Afghan forces to continue the decade-long battle against Taliban insurgents.

But civilians have borne the brunt of the war. More died in 2011 alone than the total number of NATO troops killed in 10 years.

Last year's 3,021 civilian deaths marked the fifth straight year that the toll has risen, UN figures show, while 3,007 NATO soldiers have died since the 2001 US-led invasion, according to icasualties.org.

Meanwhile the number of internal refugees last year hit nearly half a million, the highest for about a decade, part of what Amnesty International has called "a largely hidden but horrific humanitarian and human rights crisis".

And more than 30,000 Afghans sought asylum abroad last year -- another 10-year high. Thousands of others make their way abroad illegally.

Aleema, a sad-eyed girl in ragged clothes, is one of the 447,547 "internally displaced persons" who have fled their homes, mainly in the war-torn south.

Explaining why her life is "the worst", she says simply: "We don't have proper food and we don't have a proper house."

She wants to go home to Helmand province, but knows that won't happen while the fighting continues.

The Taliban are far from defeated on the battleground, a tentative peace process is in tatters and the fighting is expected to persist, if not intensify, once the foreign troops leave.

Ask Aleema's neighbours in the Charahi Qambar refugee camp, a maze of narrow dirt alleys and open drains on the western outskirts of Kabul, whom they blame for driving them from their homes and they tend to spread the net wide.

"All of them, they are all killing innocent people -- the Taliban, the foreign forces and the government forces," said Said Gul, 35, also from Helmand.

He has lived with his extended family of 18 in Charahi Qambar for four years and has lost hope of returning home, putting his future "in the hands of God".

As children play in the dirt and garbage, he sits stoically beside bowls of potatoes and onions for sale, trying to supplement what he calls "a little bit" of aid from charities.

Nigel Jenkins, country director for the US-based International Rescue Committee, said many in the aid community in Afghanistan felt the NATO withdrawal was being "rushed".

"NATO is portraying a situation in Afghanistan that is suitable for transition," he told AFP.

"That does not really stand up to scrutiny with the facts on the ground. The figures -- on internally displaced persons, asylum seekers, the civilian casualties -- speak for themselves."

Acknowledging that NATO is determined to stick to its deadline, Jenkins added: "We can't change it now. The train has left the station. But what we can do is better provide for Afghans in the most need."

Funding for aid projects is already drying up, he said, looking to a development conference on Afghanistan in Tokyo in July to help fund education and other services for Afghans when NATO troops have gone.

"There have been gains over the past 10 years and we would love to see those gains continue, but I think there is a danger they could be lost if there is a big drop in funding."

In Tokyo, governments and international organisations will discuss financial commitments for a 10-year period after 2014.

Billions of dollars of Western aid have already poured into Afghanistan since 2001. Donor nations and the UN have pledged some $500,000 dollars this year for purely humanitarian assistance, Jenkins said.

The UN refugee agency is overhauling its approach to Afghanistan after Peter Nicolaus, UNHCR's representative in Afghanistan, in December described the strategy as the "biggest mistake UNHCR ever made".

He said the international community had failed to help returnees find a means of earning a living and so reintegrating into society.

In Aleema's squalid camp, they are not holding their breath for a dramatic change in their fortunes. None of those interviewed by AFP had heard of the NATO summit, and the Tokyo conference is likely to go equally unnoticed.

is a great resource for knowing about Snoring - Healthy Referral ...

Posted on24 May 2012.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 24, 2012 ) Singapore, SG ? Studies reveal that one third of adult population in the world snores. Hours of disrupted sleep not only trouble the ones who snore but also the sleeping partner of the snorer. Many relationships tend to fall apart just because of the discomfort that snoring brings to both the partners. There are, however, many Snore Stop solutions that can be utilized to get rid of snoring.

People who snore tend to wake up in the morning with a feeling of incomplete rest and feel the urge to go back to sleep again. For all

those who wonder about ?How Can I Stop Snoring? can seek benefit from variety of home based Snoring Remedies that Work. Some of these are as follows:

Getting an extra pillow while sleeping. This ensures that the head is in elevated position. A raised head, four inches above the bed, ensures easy breathing for the snorers. A wedge shaped pillow or special anti-snoring pillows can be tried to ease the trouble.

Avoiding dairy products before the bedtime helps. Most people enjoy having a warm cup of hot flavored milk before going to bedtime. However, dairy products can increase the likelihood to snore, if taken immediately before sleeping.

Quitting smoking is very important for every snorer. It irritates the tissues of airways and leads to inflammation. Not only will it help relieve the snoring but it will also improve the overall health.

Say NO to alcoholic beverages. Alcohol makes the muscles of the throat relax and can at times collapse the airway. It is best to avoid alcohol especially before bedtime.

Shedding off those extra pounds before going to sleep can also help remove the excess fat around the throat and the mouth.

In addition to the afore-mentioned remedies, taking a tablespoon of honey before bedtime, setting a regular sleep regime, avoiding sleeping on the back, and using an air humidifier in the room are a few Snore Remedies that can work great for any snorer.

White House: Apps for key government services coming within a year

2 hrs.

With more of us relying?on our phones and the hundreds of?thousands of apps available to help manage our lives, the Obama administration Wednesday issued a directive to?every federal agency to make "two key government services the American people depend on available on mobile phones?within the next 12 months."

"Americans deserve a government that works for them anytime, anywhere, and on any device," said President Barack Obama in a statement.?

The plan is part of a larger effort announced Wednesday to make "large amounts of government data more easily accessible to the public to spur entrepreneurs to develop innovative new services and mobile applications that take advantage of this data, creating new opportunities, businesses and jobs in the process. These actions are part of a larger digital strategy being implemented by the Administration?? a roadmap that will guide the Federal government as it makes the most of new sources of digital information."?

"Mobile is rapidly becoming the platform of choice for Americans; it is now anticipated that by 2015 more people will be accessing the Internet via mobile phones than via traditional desktop computer," the White House said in a?statement. "By next spring, the American people will be able to access dozens of additional government services on their mobile phones for the first time."

There are hundreds of federal agencies, so the task will be formidable.?In the?directive, the administration points to some successful examples already done by cities around the country, including San Francisco.

The City of San Francisco releases its raw public transportation data on train routes, schedules, and to-the-minute location updates directly to the public through web services This has enabled citizen developers to write over 10 different mobile applications to help the public navigate San Francisco?s public transit systems???more services than the city could provide if it focused on presentation development rather than opening the data publicly through web services.

Part of the directive calls for launching a "shared mobile application development program, in conjunction with the Federal CIO Council, that will help agencies develop secure, device-agnostic mobile applications, provide a development test environment to streamline app delivery, foster code-sharing, and validate official government applications."

U.S. Chief Information Officer?Steven VanRoekel said, in a statement, that it is "critical that the federal government keep up with the way the American people do business. Already, families can use government apps to check the wait time at the airport, get access to critical veteran services, and check the status of their tax return. Today?s directive will accelerate our drive to make key services easily accessible to more Americans than ever."

Apps are indeed becoming more relevant in some ways than the Internet; the mobile programs are how more and more of us are getting information, according to a recent report from the Pew Research Center?Internet & American Life Project and The Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University.

While the government effort is ambitious, security concerns ? a growing issue with mobile phones that have increasingly sophisticated operating systems???are noted in the directive, called "Digital Government: Building a 21st Century Platform to Better Serve the American People":

The rate of change of mobile operating systems, new update and notification capabilities from external hardware and software vendors, diversity of the devices themselves, and introduction of employee-owned devices (BYOD) also make security in the mobile space more challenging than in a traditional desktop environment and require new approaches to continuously monitor and manage devices and secure the data itself.

Pakistan convicts doctor who helped find bin Laden

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A doctor who helped the CIA hunt down Osama bin Laden was convicted Wednesday of conspiring against the state and sentenced to 33 years in prison, adding new strains to an already deeply troubled relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan.

U.S. officials had urged Pakistan to release the doctor, who ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify the al-Qaida leader's presence at the compound in the town of Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed him in May 2011 in a unilateral raid.

The lengthy sentence for Dr. Shakil Afridi will be taken as another sign of Pakistan's defiance of American wishes. It could give more fuel to critics in the United States that Pakistan ? which has yet to arrest anyone for helping shelter bin Laden ? should no longer be treated as an ally.

The verdict came days after a NATO summit in Chicago that was overshadowed by tensions between the two countries that are threatening American hopes of an orderly end to the war in Afghanistan and withdrawal of its combat troops by 2014.

Islamabad was invited in expectation it would reopen supply lines for NATO and U.S. troops to Afghanistan it has blocked for nearly six months to protest U.S. airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani troops on the Afghan border. But it did not reopen the routes, and instead repeated demands for an apology from Washington for the airstrikes.

Pakistan's treatment of Afridi since his arrest following the bin Laden raid has in many ways symbolized the gulf between Washington and Islamabad.

In the United States and other Western nations, Afridi was viewed as a hero who had helped eliminate the world's most-wanted man. But Pakistan army and spy chiefs were outraged by the raid, which led to international suspicion that they had been harboring the al-Qaida chief. In their eyes, Afridi was a traitor who had collaborated with a foreign spy agency in an illegal operation on its soil.

Afridi, in his 50s, was detained sometime after the raid, but the start of his trial was never publicized.

He was tried under the Frontier Crimes Regulations, or FCR ? the set of laws that govern Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region. Human rights organizations have criticized the FCR for not providing suspects the right to legal representation, to present material evidence, or to cross-examine witnesses. Verdicts are handled by a government official in consultation with a council of elders.

Afridi was tried in the Khyber tribal region, where he was raised. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to pay a fine of about $3,500 and is subject to an additional 3? years in prison if he does not, according to Nasir Khan, a government official in Khyber.

Afridi can appeal the verdict within two months, said Iqbal Khan, another Khyber government official.

An official with Pakistan's main Inter-Services Intelligence agency said the decision was in Pakistan's "national interest," and he dismissed earlier appeals by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other American officials that Afridi should be released. The official did not give his name because the ISI doesn't allow its operatives to be identified in the media.

Asked in Washington to comment, Pentagon press secretary George Little declined to talk about the specific case, but added: "Anyone who supported the United States in finding Osama bin Laden was not working against Pakistan. They were working against al-Qaida."

Afridi was working for local health authorities in northwest Pakistan when he began working for the CIA. Nurses working for him reportedly knocked on the door of the compound in Abbottabad, but were not successful in obtaining a sample from the house to confirm bin Laden was living there.

After the raid, the Pakistan army kicked out U.S. military trainers and limited counterterrorism cooperation with the CIA. But relations got even worse in November when the U.S. killed the Pakistani border guards, an attack that Washington said was an accident but the Pakistani army insisted was deliberate.

Pakistan retaliated by closing the NATO supply routes and kicking the U.S. out of a base used by American drones. Before the attack, the U.S and other NATO countries fighting in Afghanistan shipped about 30 percent of their nonlethal supplies through Pakistan. Since then, the coalition has used far more expensive routes through Russia and Central Asia.

The U.S. has pressed Pakistan to reopen the supply line, but negotiations have been hampered by Washington's refusal to apologize for the attack and stop drone strikes in the country as demanded by Pakistan's parliament.

The latest drone strike took place Wednesday, when two missiles hit a compound in Datta Khel Kalai village in the North Waziristan tribal area, killing four suspected militants, said Pakistani intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give their names to the media.

Despite the tensions, most analysts believe the U.S. cannot afford to turn its back on Pakistan entirely.

Pakistan is seen as vital to negotiating a peace deal with the Afghan Taliban and their allies, given the country's historical ties with the militants. Many in the Pakistani government realize it needs to repair relations with the U.S., partly to receive more than a billion dollars in American aid.

Talat Masood, a retired Pakistani general who is now a defense analyst, said the ISI likely preferred to see Afridi tried under the FCR because it was easier to get a prosecution than in a regular court. He said the verdict may reflect Pakistani annoyance at perceived ill-treatment at the Chicago meeting, but that improved relations could see him released.

"If things go well with the U.S., it's very likely that he will be pardoned," he said.

Ecommerce Website Development And Its Great Benefits

The last few years has experienced an extraordinary rise in the number of eCommerce sites that provide on the internet purchasing. It is because of some benefits like saving of time, money, and resources along with increased customer support. Ecommerce website development is the main reason for the increased popularity of online purchasing sites.

While ecommerce development, some of the web page, pictures are compulsory, they (images) are not necessary for other sites. For most of the web page that provide on the internet purchasing, pictures are necessary for effective the potential customers, but the biggest gloomy of pictures is that they (images) are not considered for listing on the internet Google look for record. It is to get rid of this adverse feature that the web designers are now using RDFa technological innovation.

The RDFa technological innovation is similar to micro data and micro formats. The Google (SE) can be provided with more details with the help of this technology. These details are partitioned classification wise. The individual cannot see this classification because of the embedding of details. On the other hand these details are apparent to the Google. This helps the lifting of the web page URL in the internet Google look for record.

?

The search engine can assist in the users of Google look for pages (SERPs) directly with classified and extended details in the function of thoughts that are RDFa rich. This strategy improves presses from specific visitors and consequently improves the ctr. The use of RDFa technology used in ecommerce development makes the web page internet Google look for helpful as well as simple to use. Being helpful on both sides was nearly impossible before the introduction of RDFa technological innovation.?

?

Every item page should have control buttons for ?Add to Cart?, ?Go to Shopping Cart?, and ?Check out?. ?There should be ability of ?Remove from the Cart? the payments should involve the strategies and taxation if appropriate.

?

After being simple to use and internet search for helpful comes the stage of guaranteeing the guest about the secrecy of the financial deal data such as details.

?

There should be a system through which the client gets informed about the client having requested the products or services and these details should involve the product along with the all inclusive costs that has to be carried by the client on shipping of the item.?

?

When any Ecommerce website development is effective at attractive and effective the client and when the client is fulfilled with the assistance offered by the business, the recommendation market is expected to get increased. Twitter Back Up In Pakistan After An Order From The Prime Minister

pakistan flagA temporary solution to the drama that unfolded this morning when Twitter was blocked in Pakistan -- some believe over representations of the Prophet Mohammed and Twitter's refusal to block these images; and some believe while it was testing an image filtering service. Whatever it was, the site is now back up --after an order from Prime Minister. Pakistan's Express Tribune?is reporting that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani made the decision after the site was down for the day on a mandate from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. But it is still not clear why the authorities shut down access in the first place.

Verlander nearly throws 3rd no-hitter for Tigers

DETROIT (AP) ? Two outs were all that separated Justin Verlander from yet another rare achievement ? and an exclusive club that includes Cy Young, Nolan Ryan and only three other pitchers.

With the crowd on its feet in anticipation of Verlander's third no-hitter, the Detroit ace threw a sharp breaking ball, just off the outside corner. Josh Harrison stuck his bat out and flicked a soft line drive agonizingly toward center field.

"That's why throwing no-hitters is so difficult," Verlander said. "It doesn't take a hard one, it just takes the right placement."

Harrison's ninth-inning single broke up Verlander's latest no-hit bid, but the powerful right-hander was brilliant again for the Tigers, striking out 12 in a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Verlander allowed two walks and settled for his first career one-hitter. He nearly became the sixth major leaguer to throw at least three no-hitters.

Verlander also fell just short of the third no-hitter in the majors already this season. Philip Humber pitched a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox at Seattle on April 21, and Jered Weaver tossed a no-hitter for the Los Angeles Angels against Minnesota on May 2.

"The adrenaline is like nothing else. You don't really feel anything. My legs were just kind of tingling," Verlander said. "Everything's amplified in that situation. You're like, 'Man, I don't want to throw the wrong one.' But you've just got to trust your instincts and go with what you feel."

Four of the five pitchers with at least three no-hitters are in the Hall of Fame: Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four), Bob Feller (three) and Young (three). Larry Corcoran, an ambidextrous pitcher who won 177 games from 1880-85, is the other one.

The 29-year-old Verlander, last year's AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, really brought the crowd to life in the eighth with three straight strikeouts. Casey McGehee went down looking at a 98 mph fastball, then Nate McLouth struck out swinging on a pitch that hit 99.

Verlander reached 100 mph with his first pitch to Clint Barmes, and after getting him to chase an outside pitch for strike three, he walked slowly to the Detroit dugout and down the steps closest to home plate on the third-base side ? while teammates used another entrance at the opposite end.

In the ninth, Michael McKenry grounded to shortstop Jhonny Peralta on a 3-2 offering, and Verlander got ahead of Harrison before he reached for a 1-2 slider and sent a clean single up the middle that Peralta couldn't get to.

"I was so amped to hit his 100 mph fastball that I didn't even know where the ball was going," Harrison said. "He never threw me a fastball in that at-bat, but I finally got a pitch I could put my bat on."

Verlander (5-1) saw the ball drop in shallow center and bent backward on the mound, knowing how close he came. He settled for his sixth career shutout and 16th complete game. He threw 109 pitches.

"Would I rather it be hard-hit? Of course," Verlander said. "But a hit's a hit's a hit."

The sellout crowd at Comerica Park gave Verlander a big ovation and he quickly finished off the Pirates with a pair of groundouts. After the Tigers lined up for high-fives, Verlander saluted fans with a wave.

Verlander no-hit Toronto on May 7, 2011. His other no-hitter came June 12, 2007, against Milwaukee.

This was his first one-hitter, although he allowed one hit in eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels last season, one of several close calls to go with the no-hitter against the Blue Jays.

After rolling to the AL Central title in 2011 and adding Prince Fielder in the offseason, Detroit was just 18-20 entering Friday night's game. Against the Pirates, the Tigers provided a glimpse of what Motown was hoping to see this season.

Miguel Cabrera and Fielder hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first off Charlie Morton (2-4). Delmon Young added a solo homer in the fourth, and Don Kelly's run-scoring single later that inning made it 4-0.

Then there was Verlander, who was facing an overmatched Pittsburgh lineup that doesn't see him much.

The buzz began to build in the fourth. Neil Walker hit a hard line drive, but right at Brennan Boesch in right field. Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez then struck out.

"With him, anytime like the fifth, sixth inning, with his stuff, you think it could happen," Detroit catcher Alex Avila said. "His stuff was better today than it was last year during his no-hitter."

In the sixth, McKenry made decent contact but hit a grounder right at Peralta. Then Harrison sent a drive toward left-center field. Kelly ? playing center because of an injury to Austin Jackson ? was able to make a running catch and keep the no-hit bid going.

It was Verlander's 51st straight regular-season start of at least six innings.

The sun didn't set until around 9 p.m. on this mid-May night in Michigan, and with Verlander breezing through the Pittsburgh lineup, the sky didn't really begin to darken until the seventh.

Walker struck out looking to begin that inning ? then had a few words for plate umpire CB Bucknor. McCutchen walked for Pittsburgh's first baserunner since the first inning, but Alvarez grounded to first and Garrett Jones was caught looking at a breaking ball.

NOTES: Bucknor was shaken up in the first when he was hit around the collarbone by a wild pitch. ... Boesch extended his hitting streak to 11 games. ... Detroit's Drew Smyly (1-0) takes the mound against Pittsburgh's A.J. Burnett (1-2) on Saturday.

Nurses (yes, nurses) lead charge for Wall Street 'sin' tax

Tannen Maury / EPA

Members of National Nurses United rally in Daley Plaza on Friday, ahead of the NATO Summit in Chicago.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

A coalition of nurses? unions is calling for a ?Robin Hood? tax on Wall Street, which they say could generate up to $350 billion a year, in the first major protest ahead of this weekend?s NATO summit in Chicago.

Their pitch: impose a tax of 50 cents on every $100 of trades of stocks, bonds, dividends and other financial transactions, which are not currently taxed. The U.S. would join more than a dozen other nations that already have a financial transaction tax, according to National Nurses United (NNU).

"I've been asked many, many times ... 'What are you doing here as nurses? ... What do you have to do with the economy?'"?Karen Higgins, a registered nurse and co-president of NNU, said to the crowd in Chicago's Daley Plaza. ?

"We're watching this every day. We're watching patients suffer," she said, noting that nurses were seeing people without insurance or others who can't afford their co-pays, as well as a spike in the number of children with adult diseases due to eating poorly because their parents can't afford healthy food. "This is serious and in some cases it is actually deadly."

Storify: Scenes from the NATO summit protests

"We know the solution .. we are watching and seeing Wall Street throwing our money away as we see people suffer and die. It will not continue," she said. "We pay sales tax. It is time for Wall Street to start paying back what they owe the rest of the country and they need to pay sales tax."

The nurses? call echoes last fall?s outcry by the Occupy Wall Street protesters over income equality, corruption and corporate greed. Proceeds from the Wall Street tax would support social services, education and healthcare.

The financial transaction tax is not a new concept. The U.S. had one from 1914 to 1966, and several politicians called for another one after the Wall Street crash in 1987, National Nurses United said.

Supporters include Nobel Laureate economists Paul Krugman, a New York Times columnist,?and Joseph Stiglitz, the former World Bank chief economist -- both of whom have spoken out in favor of such a tax in the past.

A bill introduced last November by two U.S. Democratic lawmakers, Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Peter DeFazio, calls for a tax of 0.03 percent -- or 3 cents on every $100 -- on most non-consumer financial trading including stocks, bonds and other debts. It would raise more than $43 billion a year, according to DeFazio's office, which cited analysis from Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation.

Others, however, are against what has been called a ?sin? tax on Wall Street.

?Our research shows unambiguously that higher trading costs depress the prices of stocks and bonds,? business school professors Yakov Amihud and Haim Mendelson? wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.??A transactions tax will end up punishing Main Street, hurting the economy and reducing U.S. Treasury revenues in the next few years. It will thus exacerbate the effects of the financial crisis.?

The tax proposal protesters were initially targeting the G8 summit of global financial leaders that starts today. But when that meeting was moved from Chicago to Camp David in Maryland, they opted to carry on their demonstrations here anyway to take advantage of the large number of protesters converging on the city for the NATO summit.

Mary O'Sullivan, 72, came to the protest with her husband Chris Fogarty, 77. The retired married couple each held a sign, one reading "Honk To Indict Banksters" and the other "Stop Gov't Crimes."

"We're hoping that even at this late date the government will recognize that there is so much pain and suffering amongst the people that they will at least start paying attention," O'Sullivan said, noting she had recently spoken with a woman at a city mental health care facility that's being closed down. "She has no idea where she is going to go or how she is going to get there, and in the meantime, we're spending millions of dollars on drones to kill people."

Earlier this week, protesters demonstrated against the shuttering of local schools and mental health clinics, the loss of homes through foreclosures, and environmental issues surrounding the controversial ?Tar Sands? pipeline, and they stormed the building that houses the headquarters of President Obama?s campaign.

Nam Y. Huh / AP

Demonstrators rally against the Keystone Pipeline and the Alberta Tar Sands outside of the Canadian Consulate in downtown Chicago on Thursday.

The city has assigned 3,100 officers plus hundreds from other cities to guard against the kind of violence that broke out in the streets of Seattle at the World Trade Organization meeting in 1999, NBCChicago.com reported, and officials have warned of massive travel disruptions.

They?ve also imposed limits on how close the protesters, which include dozens of unions and anti-war, environmental, education, healthcare and civil liberties? groups, can get to the convention center where the summit is being held -- within ?sight and sound? of it, according to the Chicago Tribune -- raising the ire of the demonstrators.

The National Lawyers Guild, which is sending out legal observers to the demonstrations and aiding those who are detained, said late Thursday that at least 20 people have been arrested so far this week. Occupy Chicago said 11 arrests occurred Wednesday night at an area home ? though it?s not clear if those 11 were included in the guild?s tally.?

Organizers expect the biggest crowds at a rally led by anti-war activists on Sunday, in which a group of 9/11-era veterans plan to return their service medals to protest the "war on terror."

Todd Gitlin, a former leader of the 1960s-era group Students for a Democratic Society and a Columbia University sociology and journalism professor, said the Wall Street tax was an obvious focus for protesters.

?It?s concrete. It might be winnable. It has global resonance because you?ve got ?? several national governments in Europe that support it,? he said, noting that it clearly distinguishes between the 99 percent and the 1 percent, and had an ?intrinsic fairness? about it. ?It?s a reform that rings sensible to large numbers of people but a lot of work has to be done? . Most people right now I think don?t get it.?

Do you think the U.S. should impose a transaction tax on Wall Street?

'Battleship': The Reviews Are In!

Critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed Peter Berg's film, giving credit to its entertainment factor.

Many movie fans have been wary as to whether director Peter Berg could successfully pull of "Battleship." Inspired by a Hasbro board game giving no hint of any type of plot, the sci-fi epic follows the adventures of an international Navy fleet when aliens begin to invade earth. As the two forces go to battle, each must rely on a crafty, cunning strategy in order to conquer their enemy. The all-star, insanely attractive cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgård, Liam Neeson and Rihanna, in her movie debut.

While some have written off "Battleship" as a lesser version of "Transformers," critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed the film. They praise the movie for not taking itself too seriously and give credit to its entertainment factor.

The Story
"The surprise, for this veteran of board games, is that Battleship is also the rousing, engaging, and emotionally complex action war picture the silly 2001 action war picture 'Pearl Harbor' only wished it could be. It's 'Pearl Harbor' with greater intelligence, less hokum, and more aliens. For every line of howler dialogue that should have been sunk, there's a nice little scene in which humans have to make a difficult decision. For every stretch of generic sci-fi-via-CGI moviemaking, there's a welcome bit of wit. Under the direction of Peter Berg — the talented, ever-maturing filmmaker behind 'Friday Night Lights' and 'The Kingdom' — 'Battleship' is a sound vessel floating in Hollywood's oil-slick sea of 'Transformers' sequels and vampire riffs." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

The Cast
"The attractive cast does no more than Berg and the script require, which is very little indeed. After 'John Carter,' Kitsch is still waiting for a film vehicle to make good on the easy, authentic charm he exhibits in TV's 'Friday Night Lights,' though he's physically up to the task here. Fans of pop megastar Rihanna, making her film debut, will be disappointed to find that the role of Raikes may as well be renamed Young Female Demographic for all the pertinence it has to the narrative, but she's a sparky enough presence." — Guy Lodge, Variety

"Kitsch, coming off the super-flop 'John Carter,' soft-pedals the charm, exuding just enough charisma to get by. The striking-looking Skarsgård ('True Blood') is ramrod-straight and impossibly grave throughout, while Decker's expression toggles between blank and very blank." — Megan Lehmann, The Hollywood Reporter

The Special Effects
"Tech credits are all polished, if not as metallically sleek as they would be with a Michael Bay-style craftsman at the helm. Tobias Schliesser's lensing covers the teal-and-orange palette seemingly mandatory for such adventures these days, while Steve Jablonsky's score thumps and drones away with nary a pause, little betraying the presence of rock super-producer Rick Rubin and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on the music team. The bulk of the attention in this evidently expensive production has been lavished on Industrial Light & Magic's typically immaculate effects, which are firmly in the "Transformers" mold stylistically, with the added challenge of water simulation. That such state-of-the-art creations have been used to realize a story whose climax hinges on a true-life WWII battleship, USS Missouri, outlasting its newer, shinier rivals is an irony probably lost on all involved." — Lodge

The Final Word
"The creative team behind this ocean-bound thriller decided to fill the narrative black hole with a few ingredients all but absent from today's summer tent poles — namely mystery, nostalgia and a healthy dose of humility. Just as blockbusters have made the hard turn towards fantasy heroes who solemnly go about their business in high-def-but-low-impact 3D cage matches, Battleship is an unapologetically goofy, surprisingly enigmatic, refreshingly self-deprecating deviation from the norm. I hesitate to confess that I had more fun here than I did at 'The Avengers,' because low expectations surely had a lot to do with it, but it's the truth. Heck, I'd pay to see the thing again." — Steven James Snyder, TIME Magazine
